The Abu Dhabi-Dubai commute could take less than 15 minutes if Peter Diamandis has his way.
The co-founder of the United States-based Planetary Resources has landed in the UAE to bang the drum for a futuristic form of travel known as the “hyperloop” – where people are catapulted through a near-frictionless vacuum tube at speeds of up to 1,220kph.
“I want you to imagine going from Dubai to Abu Dhabi in less than 15 minutes on the ground next to a motorway,” Mr Diamandis said in Dubai.

Accompanying him on his UAE trip is Brogan Bambrogan, the former rocket engineer of aerospace firm SpaceX.
He is currently the chief technology officer and co-founder of Hyperloop Technologies.
By next year his company aims to have completed a full speed track test of between three and four kilometres. Then the plan is to pick a site for the real thing.
The company is in talks with a number of locations across the world, according to Mr Diamandis.
“I brought Brogan here on this trip to introduce him to some leadership here in the Emirates,” he said. “If the UAE wants it, it could be operational before 2020,” he added.
The hyperloop is the brainchild of Elon Musk, the entrepreneur behind Tesla electric cars and SpaceX aerospace manufacturer fame.
“Hyperloop is about reinventing transportation,” said Mr Diamandis. “This is about the future. This is like how mobile telephony reinvented the world many times over.”
In the meantime commuters braving the traffic between Dubai and Abu Dhabi may have to make do with four wheels, an engine and a salik tag.

Aral

Aral Sea

Millions of years ago, the northwestern parts of Uzbekistan and southern Kazakhstan were covered by a massive inland sea. When the waters receded, they left a broad plain of highly saline soil. One of the remnants of the ancient sea was the Aral Sea, the fourth largest inland body of water in the world.
Aral Sea was once the fourth largest inland sea in the world. Moynaq, was the largest port on the Aral, a finger of coast where a significant part of the Aral catch was processed and canned. In 1921 as the Volga region suffered a terrible famine, Lenin appealed to the Aral fleet for help and within days 21,000 tonnes of fish had been dispatched, saving thousands of Russian lives. Today it is a nightmarish town of stagnant, corrosive pools and deserted factories, the victim of a Soviet crusade to overcome nature. Not a single fish can survive in the sea, 10,000 fishermen have lost their jobs and Moynaq has lost its raison d’etre.
The only reason to visit it is a macabre one; to witness the death throes of the sea and the dramatic sight of dozens of deserted fishing boats rusted at their moorings, submerged in sand, riding the crest of a sand dune, 100 kilometres (60 miles) from the shoreline. Many of the ships have been sold off for scrap in recent years so you might have to hunt around to find some. To visit the ship’s graveyard continue north through the town from the bus station for two kilometres and head northeast, over the crunchy, white top soil of salt and sea shells, towards the large canning factory. A solitary taster of the debacle ahead lies on display at the bus station and a wider view of the area can be gained from the northern promontory. The town has a small museum (closed Sunday) with photos and paintings of the Aral’s heyday.

Karshi
Karshi is a city in southern Uzbekistan, in Kashqadaryo province, about 520 km south-southwest of Tashkent, and about 335 km north of Uzbekistan’s border with Afghanistan. In the early 1970s, the first section of a major irrigation project was completed to divert water from the Amu Darya River in Turkmenistan eastward into Uzbekistan to irrigate the land surrounding Karshi.

Samarkand
Samarkand is situated in the Zerafshan Valley, and surrounded by the spurs of the Pamir-Alay ranges. Ancient Samarkand was well-known both in the East and the West. In the 4th c. BC, Samarkand, then called Marakanda, was one of the centers of culture and trade in the East.
