What is the Major Difference in Doing MBBS in India and MBBS Abroad?
- The course duration: all the medical universities outside India have an academic curriculum that for 6 years comprises of 5 years of theoretical study and one year of internship. For MBBS in India, this curriculum is for 5.5 years which 4.5 years of study and one year of internship.
- The course fee: Indian government colleges do not charge for a hefty fee structure as compared to the Indian private medical colleges. As for the medical colleges abroad, they do not ask for donations and the academic fee per year is less than that of the Indian private medical institutions.
- The reputation: not many of the Indian medical colleges are listed in the top medical colleges ranking in the world. Even AIIMS, Delhi, India’s top medical college is not there in the top 100 medical colleges in the world. In such a situation, it is better to be associated with a medical college abroad than going to a private medical institution.
- Personality development: living outside India will inculcate a good personality within you owing to the global exposure that you will receive. You will become more learned and experienced when you study MBBS abroad as compared to India.
- The NMC Screening Test: if you want to return after your MBBS abroad to India, you will have to appear for the NMC Screening Test also called as the FMGE to obtain the license for practicing medicine in India. When you study from any medical college in India, you are provided with a license after your graduation without any need for sitting for an examination.
- The global exposure: when you go to studying medicine abroad, you will meet a lot of new people from different countries and you learn their culture as well. This helps in providing you a global exposure for better personality development.
- Clinical knowledge: India has a growing population and so the hospitals are flooded with patients every single day. You will indeed get a good level of clinical knowledge while studying and practicing in India, but you can get into new researches and development whilst studying MBBS abroad.
- World-class infrastructure: except a few medical colleges of the country, medical facilities in India lack basic infrastructure. If you go for MBBS abroad, you will get to indulge in quality education that too with world-class state of the art infrastructure medical universities.
- Global reputation: it is always better to go and study in universities that have a global reputation in the world. MBBS in Abroad offers you several advantages to indulge on a global degree.
- Family and Friends: with MBBS in India, you will be living in the country and can meet your parents, family, and friends on special occasions. You will also not miss the Indian food and the feel the vibe of living in your own country.
- The NEET exam: for pursuing MBBS in India, you need to score good marks and top ranks to get a seat into the top medical college of the country. For this, you have to appear for the NEET exam too.
The National Medical Commission’s website shows 43,310 MBBS seats available in 284 government medical colleges in India, and 41,065 MBBS seats in 269 private medical colleges. This means only about half of the already meager seats are in affordable government colleges. And there’s a massive difference in the cost of studying in “small countries”, When compared to private colleges in India. While 8.70 lakh candidates cleared NEET-UG in 2021, there were only 88,120 undergraduate seats in medical colleges in India as of December.
The seats of the medical colleges are increasing gradually but if the govt increases it like that of engineering the quality of doctors would be as same as the quality of engineers which most of the private engineering colleges are producing so keeping in mind the quality of doctor the govt is taking adequate steps. We all have to agree that there is a huge shortage of doctors in our country but the problem which has been the prime reason behind this shortage is not the number of seats but also the doctors going abroad, the government spends almost more than 50 lakhs on each doctor in a government college and the fees which it charges is like peanuts in front of the actual fee and what some do in return they go abroad do the services for other countries, pay taxes there, I m not saying that you should not go abroad but there is a saying that when there is a fire in your house use your bucket of water for your own purpose. So, the doctors should stay in our motherland and first give their services here and then if the doctors are inadequate number then should go abroad, and the government also has to play a huge role in this they have to increase the salaries of doctors so that they can easily stay here and have a quality of life and the parents of students should also keep in mind that yes doctors and engineers or maybe some few professions have got more respect in our society but this is due to us BCS we gave them more imp than other, so. Every profession should be given its due respect whether it be sports, music, or anything else many people are of the opinion that doctors from private medical colleges are not up to the mark as compared to government medical colleges, but this is not the absolute truth since just as money can buy seats in private certain other factors known to everyone can get you a seat in a govt medical college. Hence, there can be academically weak students from both places. Some students from private colleges I know have done extremely well, managing to get postgraduation abroad as well as good placements. It is important to remember I know this that irrespective of the degree a doctor has very rarely will he take responsibility to manage a patient unless he is absolutely sure about his capabilities. Many of these doctors who own nursing homes etc, usually call another doctor for another opinion in complicated cases, and rarely will a surgeon operate on a patient without an expert assistant whom he can rely on, this is very common, in serious life-threatening cases usually every doctor sees to it. That the best doctor sees the patient. For routine issues, it is the responsibility of the patient also to choose his doctor carefully.
Career options for MBBS India produce 88120 MBBS every year, 20000 Foreign Medical Graduates come to India every year. Even if only 16% clear the Foreign Medical Graduates exam that still makes the number of qualified and licensed MBBS doctors produced yearly at 70200. The government which is the largest employer has 1750 vacancies every year for MBBS to work in Primary Health Centres. An about similar number are employed yearly by various Government agencies like railways, ESI, PSUs, army, and other institutions. This leaves 66700 MBBS doctors looking for jobs every year. Some of them will join post-graduation, but even with the increased number of seats still about 35000 MBBS doctors yearly who are unemployed. Since the number of PG seats was limited to about half the current strength up to 2 years ago there is a backlog of previous years which adds to this number which is visible in the 1 lac MBBS doctors appearing for the NEET PG entrance exam every year. These 35000 plus the backlog do join some private hospitals as resident doctors for a few months to a few years but this is not a career option. There is no career in being a resident doctor however good in clinical skills you may be. It is not as if it is a permanent job with a regular pay scale and yearly increments and stock options. Ultimately after some time, you are expected to move on. This is where a problem arises. Those who are left without a post-graduation, have tried multiple attempts to crack the NEET PG, done residents' jobs for 3 years or so, and are not beneficiaries of any reservation so have not got any Government Job, are the ones who are most vulnerable. Already about 27 -28 years of age and expected by their families and friends to be “settled” they are adrift with no sense of direction. Some try to go abroad to seek greener pastures. Setting up a practice is easier said than done. To set up a GP practice in a city is no longer a financially viable option for them. Costs are prohibitive in cities and the GP space in suburbs, small towns, and villages is firmly occupied by entrenched Government approved quacks and cross paths. The turf war among specialists has to lead to a situation where despite being a graduate in medicine and surgery the MBBS can neither practice medicine nor surgery, obstetrics, ENT, Eye, or any other field which today is defined as a specialty. Unfortunately, our courts have contributed their might to creating this mess. Unfortunately, this weakest segment of our profession is the one that is least heard in the innumerable conferences and meetings of professional associations. Is it not our responsibility as seniors to secure the professional needs of your youngsters.
Just imagine, by simply increasing no. of seats, they start taking students of even low marks in NEET who are incompatible to bear the stresses of medical college life (those who are in med schools know what kind of stress I'm talking about). This would lead to havoc creating average and below-average doctors that would directly put the life of patients and the healthcare of our nation in dangerous hands.
We did not have our first and foremost demand as the creation of more regular posts for MBBS doctors to serve in our country. We cry hoarse about the dearth of doctors but are loathe to provide them as a career option as doctors to the community. National Medical Commission (NMC) was to take the scarcity of MBBS seats seriously, in order to provide enough opportunities for every student who aspires to medical education in India.
