The Benefits of LEED Certification

Leave the Competition Behind. Whether you are a freelance designer, or head of a multi-million dollar corporation, it is important to stay on top of the cutting edge trends in your industry. In this economy, you can't risk losing out on bids and potential business because you aren't in the know. Having an Accredited Professional on staff can be a highly marketable asset. For example, did you know that all GBCI registered projects that have an Accredited Professional on the job receive an extra point towards the project certification? This easy, single point can be the difference between the project being awarded a Gold versus Silver status. This is just one of many examples of why having an Accredited Professional on staff can give you an edge over your competition.
Signify Your Green Building Expertise. You've worked hard to become educated on green building concepts and strategies. Turn this knowledge into a tangible credential, developed and backed by the U.S. Green Building Council. The Green Associate and Accredited Professional credentials have gained national and global notoriety as the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating system becomes one of the most widely used standards for green building and design. Having these credentials after your name and on your resume will help you become a more attractive candidate for green jobs, consulting gigs, and other opportunities in the green building field.
New Directions, New Business. Capitalize on the Green Collar economy. Whether you are looking to start a new career path, or develop new business for your company, accreditation can be a stepping-stone to new contacts and new opportunities for success in the green building and design fields.
Make a Difference in How We Design & Build. Many current methods used in the building industry can be harmful to our planet, our communities, and even our health. Take action towards improving this system, by learning and implementing more sustainable, eco-friendly, and energy-efficient practices. Whether it's developing improved waste management strategies, or spearheading the installation of a green roof, individuals of all skills and backgrounds can play an integral role in promoting and implementing this change.

The Importance and Advantages of LEED Certification

Acquiring LEED certification will introduce you to the following benefits:
  • Recover higher costs as green building offers a lot of alternatives that can downsize the structural, electrical and mechanical system.
  • Designs are cost-effective since building saves from 20% to 50% energies compared to common construction.
  • Care for the future
  • Enhance health and well-being of tenants
  • Get introduced to large number of equipment which can help you save more energy and be environment friendly.
LEED Certification are given to organizations likes Construction, Commercial Interiors, Existing Buildings, New Buildings, Core and Shell, Schools, Homes, Hotels, Retail, Healthcare and Neighborhood Development. This orients the company on how to contribute in taking care of our environment.

Standards of LEED Certification

To get the LEED Certification, you must secure the following:
  • Prevention of pollution within the construction site
  • Reduce water use
  • Minimum energy performance as per ASHRAE 90.1
  • Building energy systemsn
  • Refrigeratioin management
  • Collecting and storing recyclables
  • Smoke-free environment

LEED exam in India and qualifying for the LEED Green Associate

There are three ways to qualify for the LEED Green Associate exam:
1) You must be or have been employed in a sustainable field of work OR
2) You must be or have been involved in a LEED certified project within the last three years OR
3) You must show involvement in an education program that addresses green building principles
It is possible that your work as a senior engineer in HVAC planning would qualify as a “sustainable field of work.” To learn more, check out our previous article to learn what we believe qualifies as a sustainable field of work.
However, the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI) will give the official ruling on this matter, so if you are unsure of whether your work as an HVAC engineer will count, contact GBCI at gbci.org or by calling 1-800-795-1746.

LEED Experience and Green Building Education

If your field of work does not qualify you, Green-Buildings.com offers the tools you need to become eligible for the exam.
First, Green-Buildings.com offers the LEED Project Experience Program, which will make you eligible for the Green Associate exam. It will satisfy the second option for eligibility, which is involvement in a LEED project.
This program allows you to work on a live LEED project, 100% online. Since many project teams want someone who is already a LEED AP to work on their LEED project, this is a good option for aspiring LEED APs.
Additionally, Green-Buildings.com offers Green Associate exam prep courses that will provide you a certificate of completion. This certificate of completion can be used to satisfy third option for eligibility, which is involvement in a green building education program.

LEED Green Associate Exam Costs

GBCI charges a $50 application fee for the LEED Green Associate exam. Additionally, the exam (per exam appointment) costs $150 for full-time students and members, or $200 for all others.
Once you earn your Green Associate credential, you must pay $50 every two years to maintain your credential through the Credential Maintenance Program (CMP). If you choose not to maintain the credential through CMP, you can either retest or lose your credential.
