Autodesk Revit products updated status Timelines

Autodesk has acquired many companies that have or had previously created add-ins for Autodesk Revit products.

Autodesk has also created many add-ins themselves for Revit.

Sadly, many of these have been canceled or not updated for new releases and as a result development stops and the code dies somewhere.

 Examples include

Bridge Extensions, Parts of Revit Extensions, Structural Content Generator. MEP Revit

Customers are not given a choice but are forced to spend money to fill in the gaps. All Revit add-ins previously released and retired and any future additions to be retired (Revit Extensions), should be open source and made available on Github for those who wish to upgrade and maintain at their own cost, or for the development community as a resource for people working on similar tools or as a learning tool.

A previous example of this is Case Inc who made its paid addons free and open source after being acquired by WeWork.

Revit Architecture is a building design and documentation system that works the way architects and designers think. With Autodesk Revit Architecture, architects and designers get back to what they love, designing buildings, without their software getting in the way. You can work in any view that makes sense, quickly and easily making changes to major design elements. You can see your ideas visualized on the fly with 3D views and instant shadows. You can even make late-stage changes without worrying about coordinating your plans, schedules, and construction documents. This VTC course is a collection of step-by-step lessons designed to quickly teach you how to get the most out of this powerful software.

However, that work may very well depend on linking/distributing components that are not compatible with open source licensing.  In those cases, the contents cannot be released.  Also, OSL can have punitive effects on later development.  This can prevent other work from being added, no matter how useful, if it cannot or will not be compatible with the licensing.

The (main) problem is not the addins, plugins, extensions. The main problem is the Autodesk Revit policy. The lack of vision in Revit development, and in the development of construction software in general. We all remember Autodesk has bought lots of construction software and choose to close them down without offering any better alternative. E.g. Autodesk Structural Detailing, Advance Concrete, etc. I'm sure they had good reasons for doing so, but why waste time AND money in buying something and trash it away for nothing. Just for some technical licenses, just for some patents? Even so, why buying patents if not using them into newer, better products? I fail to see the profit in that.

Autodesk insists that Revit is better than Advance Concrete, and better than Structural Detailing. Maybe the base technology is better, but the implementation is NOT better.

Revit lacks essential, simple and very useful tools that any construction software has: Concrete cubage, formwork area, rebar shape detailing, steel detailing shop drawings, steel tonnage by assemblies, timber/ wood detailing, timber cubage, better CAD tools like polylines, multi lines, associative hatching, better snapping to points, a DesignCenter (like in Autocad), better import/export for CAD drawings, better arrays like in Autocad.

Allplan users and Tekla users are just LOL at these Revit inabilities.

Forget the addins, just make better Revit. By the way, I think Revit should be like Chrome and other Google products: the base version should be free (including some commercials, of course), and the productivity version should be paid for.

And all this assumes that there is a contingent of those who have the time, skill, and desire to take on such tasks.  Open source projects, for all their sheen, frequently die from lack of interest, funds, or user contributions.

Even the third point about open source misses the point entirely about open source in general, I don't expect many or even any of these tools to build some great community of developers build enhancements. The goal is for sharing and knowledge building, not creating amazing open-source movements. I know a couple of firms who use the tools that will do no more than update the code to the latest version and thereby the tools will remain relevant, others (Autodesk Developers) will use the code for internal purposes others still will use it as a point of reference and learning material when building their own product of which this tools in their entirety demonstrate well. This code was built for customers, if Autodesk no longer finds it valuable then there is still value for the Engineers.

A new version of Revit features as soon as they are ready, subscribers don’t need to wait for the annual release to access the latest Revit. The product team is happy to introduce this latest Revit point release, bringing you enhancements and optimizations including user requests and a serious piece of new functionality for MEP engineers
