Gemology is the art and profession of recognizing and assessing a wide variety of gemstones. Trained and qualified professionals are required to identify and appraise gems to be sold to jewelers.

    A career as a gemologist is a great choice for individuals interested in a variety of gemstones that are natural or synthetic. Gemologists must have good hand and finger dexterity, patience, good eye-hand coordination, and excellent concentration. Since they work with valuable materials, gemologists must be trustworthy, honest, and have good character. Those who work with customers must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

    Anyone can study gemology and be called a gemologist, but not all gemologists hold a degree in gemology. Having a degree in gemology means that you have been conferred an academic title by a school or educational institution as an indication that you have completed a gemology course. There are many gemology schools that confer various degrees on those who complete their gemology course. The most prestigious titles come from schools that have established a solid reputation over a long period of time.

      • Founded in 1991, the Indian Institute of Gemology provides top-quality education in the identification and grading of gems. Diploma programs in gemology at the Institute include basic and advanced training in gem identification and courses in diamond grading. The programs are designed for candidates who already work in gemology but wish to learn the latest scientific trends in the field. The institute is privately funded and is affiliated with leading jewelers and gem experts in India, as well as the Asian Institute of Gemological Studies in Bangkok, Thailand. Course highlights in gem identification covers a study of precious stones like rubies, sapphires, quartz and pearls.     • The Gemological Institute of America (GIA), considered by many as the world's foremost authority on precious gems, accepts students from all over the world. The school grants the Graduate Gemologist (G.G.) diploma, which is the industry's highest professional credential, to those who are able to complete the course at one of its campuses located in California, New York and various other parts of the world. At GIA, it can take as little as 6 months to learn the skills and get the recognition of a being a fully qualified professional, and acquire a Graduate Gemologist Diploma.

    • The American Gem Society (AGS) was founded in 1934 with the objective of making it easier and safer to buy jewelry, and it is dedicated to promoting the ethical representation of all jewelry products. A gemologist who is granted the title of Certified Gemologist (CG) by the American Gem Society is one who has completed advanced studies in diamonds and colored gemstones. A Certified Gemologist demonstrates mastery of diamond, gemstone and precious metal testing procedures. A gemologist who earns a degree from AGS must appear for a re-test each year to maintain his certification as a Certified Gemologist.

    • The Montreal School of Gemology is well-known gem training institution that is based in Montreal, Canada. The school provides provides full courses to students preparing to write exams for the Canadian Gemological Association (CGA), the Gemmological Association of Great Britain (Gem-A), and the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). The school issues a gemology diploma recognized by the gem and jewelry industries upon completion of its gemology program.

    The Gemmological Association of Great Britain provides four internationally recognized gem qualifications awarded after an examination: the Foundation Certificate in Gemmology, the Diploma in Gemmology, the Diamond Practical Certificate and the Gem Diamond Diploma. The Foundation Certificate and the world-renowned Diploma in Gemmology, are of the highest gemological education standard provided by the Gemmological Association of Great Britain, and are officially accredited in the UK. The Diploma in Gemmology is awarded on the basis of course work and the final exams, and it takes a minimum of six months to complete the course.

    BSc Honours Degree in Gemmology from Kingston University in London

    • The Kingston University in London, England offers Gemmology and Applied Mineralogy BSc(Hons) title to those who can satisfactorily complete its 1 to 2 year gemology course. The Level 6 course is suited for students with approved prior learning and training in the field of gemology, and is designed to develop an overview of the field of gemology and applied mineralogy.
